Thousands Blockade Hotel, Stop Evictions!

By VVAW

[Printer-Friendly Version]

Once again, as they have so many times in the past, the courts and the bigshots in San Francisco were forced to back down on an attempt to evict the tenants and the community centers of the International Hotel. Most of the tenants are elderly Filipino and Chinese workers living on social security payments.

The corporation which owns the hotel has been trying to evict the residents, tear down the building, and build something more profitable. The people of San Francisco have rallied to the tenants' defense. Four thousand people, including a contingent of VVAW massed in front of the hotel, arms linked, forming a human barricade until the police left, failing to evict the tenants.

The threat of eviction is not over. But the tenants and people of San Francisco are determined to fight to victory!
