VVAW Library and Learning Center Updates
By VVAW
[Printer-Friendly Version]
VVAW continues our exciting work with Chuck Theusch, Khoi Tran, and the Library of Vietnam Project. Thanks to a generous donation left to us in the will of a VVAW member, we are working on plans to build our FOURTH Library and Learning Center in Vietnam. This will be our largest library to date. This Library and Learning center will be at the Hanh Minh Secondary School, Nghia Hanh District, Quang Ngai Province. Plans are being drawn up in contemplation of the Library Project's 25th Anniversary, roughly coinciding with the 50th Anniversary of Vietnam's Independence, April 30, 2025.
Here are some updates on the Library and Learning Centers we have funded.
From our first library at the Pho Vinh Secondary School (grades 6-9), Duc Pho town, Quang Ngai Province, Vietnam.
"We are extremely grateful to you, the Vietnam Library Project Organization, and the sponsors for building an open reading garden that meets the needs of studying and researching library resources for our students.
In 2021, we determined that it was necessary to develop the school's culture and improve the quality of education. When the Library of Vietnam Project built the library, all the students, teachers, staff, and local people here were grateful and proud to have a spacious, modern place with a rich source of books to read, study, and research.
After the inauguration of the library, our staff unanimously contributed to improving the quality of the library, bringing the reading culture to students and the locality. Our students happily participate in reading books every day at recess or after school. Many have become passionate about reading books and come to the library regularly. Nearly three years after the library's inauguration, we appreciate the positive impacts of library activities and the information resources we now have access to.
Please send our thanks and best wishes to the sponsors."

From our second library at the Hanh Trung Primary School (grades 1-5), Hanh Nghia District, Quang Ngai Province, Vietnam
"The Library has long been considered the "golden treasure" of national culture and is an indispensable part of school culture. The library is a place to supplement and update new knowledge and make teaching methods lively and attractive. The Hanh Trung Primary School has constantly offered exciting activities at the library to promote reading among students, bringing them closer to the treasure of knowledge of humanity. From there, we teach joy and passion for reading and maintain a reading culture among students.
In May 2023, all teachers, staff, and students of Hanh Trung Primary School joyfully received an extremely spacious library from the Vietnam Library Organization and the Quang Ngai Province Children's Fund. The library has bookshelves and computers to keep up with the current digital technology age.
The first impression of the library is of a spacious, well-lit space. Books are arranged and classified neatly according to each topic. The corners are decorated in an extremely friendly, eye-catching, and lively manner, suitable for elementary school ages. Every day at recess, children come to the library very enthusiastically. Each day of the week will be reserved for each grade level to freely go inside and experience useful activities.
The school, local community, parents, and students of Hanh Trung would like to sincerely thank the Vietnam Library Organization and the Children's Fund of Quang Ngai Province and will forever consider this library our closest companion."

Construction is mainly completed at the third Vietnam Veterans Against the War sponsored Library and Learning Center at the An Nghia Secondary School (grades 6-9), An Nghia Village, Binh Dinh Province in Vietnam. The library will be placed into service around October 1, 2024. The People's Committee will let us know when the date is set for the Dedication Celebration.
We plan to post the following in the library for all to see: "Dedicated to the lasting memory of Barry Romo, a Vietnam Veteran Against the War."
The teachers and students were asked about VVAW's new addition to education at the An Nghia School.
"The Library is a treasure trove of human knowledge, provides entertainment after stressful hours, and a place for self-study and self-education enriching cultural knowledge."
"The Library nurtures dreams and aspirations and it is a bridge for teachers as well as students to knowledge outside the An Nghia Village."
"The Library is a place to take pride in the traditions of one's homeland."
"The new library at our school is important to the students. We have never had a library at this school so they have not had a place to learn how to learn. Thank you to all who have donated to it. The kids are excited now; schools have started, and there is a new library. Big Thank You for Computers and Big Screen TV."
Mr. Dang Van Nhuong, Headmaster, An Nghia Middle School.
"The Library is coming together quickly now. Soon it will be used. Thank You VVAW sponsors."
Khoi Tran
Nothing can make the loss of VVAW members less painful, but the major gift left to us by one recently passed member will help current and future generations of Vietnamese children learn and grow.
We still need to raise funds to complete our new library in 2025 and continue to support our existing libraries, so your support is essential. If you want to include VVAW in your will but don't know how, please contact the National Office at vvaw@vvaw.org. VVAW is a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.
Thanks to all who have made this project grow.
