Being With You (poem)

By Diane Ford (1971)

Being with you meant living your nightmares
Wiping the sweat from your forehead as you lay sleeping
Taking the side of the bed between you and the door
Living with guilt
Living with after war silences
Faces of the ones who never came home
Living fast, moving fast, running fast
Trying to make up for no parades
Being with you meant knowing
You never stayed in one place too long
Loving you anyway
And that was the hardest part
Of being with you.
