Fans of Robert Mason's Chickenhawk, the best-selling book that was one of the most engrossing and sensitive personal histories of service in the Vietnam War can take heart. After publishing an acclaimed science fiction book weapon, Mason earlier this year released Chickenhawk: Back in the World. The sequel is every bit as insightful as the original and perhaps provokes more controversy. Mason is extremely candid in describing his own chaotic response to post-Vietnam military and civilian life. His writing talent did not spare Mason his struggles to adjust to steady employment and deal with the lure of substance abuse. The first-hand accounts of arrest and incarceration are particularly instructive, providing rare insight into the link between the Vietnam and prison experience.
