Operation Dewey Canyon III: A Limited Incursion into the Country of Congress.
On April 18, 1971, about a thousand members of Vietnam Veterans Against the War arrived in Washington, DC and set up a campsite near the Lincoln Memorial. Over the next week, VVAW members were arrested for singing on the steps of the Supreme Court, demanding that the justices stop avoiding the issue and rule on the war's constitutionality. We marched on Arlington Cemetery, joining with Gold Star Mothers, who were barred from laying a wreath. We held a candlelight march around the White House. We lobbied and testified to congress. We engaged in guerilla theater. On April 23, over 2,000 of us marched on the Capitol and returned our medals.
