New Species of Deer Discovered in Vietnam

By Nick Ludington, AP

[Printer-Friendly Version]

Washington—Scientists have found a new mammal species—the Giant Muntjac deer—in an area they call a "lost world" in Vietnam, the World Wildlife Fund reported Thursday.

The discovery was made by Vietnamese and fund scientists in northern Vietnam's Vu Quang Nature Reserve where another new mammal species, the Vu Quang ox, was discovered in 1992.

It escaped the bombing and military pesticides such as Agent Orange, which devastated much of Vietnam's countryside during the Vietnam War.

Scientists working in the area also have found evidence of a new species of fish, two previously unknown bird species and an unknown tortoise with a striking yellow shell.

Vu Quang was described by British scientist John Mackinon as "a lost world."
