Obituary: Steve Hawkins

By VVAW

[Printer-Friendly Version]

Air force veteran and former National Office staff member.

In February 1973, Steve and Gary Steiger (of VVAW's National Office for Service Counseling and the Military) traveled to Japan to represent VVAW at the invitation of Gensuikyo (the Japanese Council Against A & H Bombs). There Steve testified about American storage of nuclear weapons in Okinawa and Japan (which was specifically prohibited in treaties between the U.S. and Japan) as well as his munitions training while in the Air Force. After his return, he directed his attention to a number of gay rights activities.

Steve died in December, 1990 due to complications of AIDS.
