Your Memory Lives: Clarence Fitch

By VVAW

[Printer-Friendly Version]

Clarence Fitch
March 2, 1948 — May 7, 1990

The memory of Clarence will live in our struggle for a better world, one free of war, racism and exploitation.

Clarence was a combat marine veteran who used his experience in Vietnam to educate others. He was active in high school and community outreach and counter-recruiting.

He was active in the working class participation in the union at the post office, as well as the anti-apartheid movement.

Opposing U.S. intervention in Central America, he traveled to Nicaragua in 1986, and to Panama several months before the U.S. invasion.

He served on the New York/New Jersey coordinating committee and was the east coast coordinator until his health forced him to step back a bit.

Clarence was an inspiration to us all. His smile and his ready wit, his friendship and his leadership will be missed.

Our deepest sympathy goes to his widow Elena, his daughter and family.

Some last thoughts from Elena

For Clarence
Our dear, sweet Clarence
Husband, father, son, brother, uncle, friend.
Companero en La Lucha.
Your loud, strong voice
Still fills the rooms in our hearts
Giving us news from the good flight
Or the score of the latest Dodgers fame.
You gave us everything you had
Holding nothing back.
And taking no prisoners.
We love you more than you probably knew.
We'll miss you more than you could have imagined.
Rest in peace, my sweet Clarence
But send us a sign every once in awhile
To keep us honest.
