RECOLLECTIONS: The Last Great War

By VVAW

[Printer-Friendly Version]

The shadow spreads across the land
The blanket of an evil hand
That sows the desolating sane
Which blows and stings the empty eyes
Who spilled the last tears they could try
Now seeing only endless sky
No reason now....to question why
For when and why and who....are gone
And only wind and sand lives on
To sing the symphony of dawn.
The wind, the sand, the oily sea
Which once the fish and fowl filled free
And even... man forbid! ....a tree.
See the empty building there
The gaping concrete windows stare
Returning now, to sand and air.
And see the slimy river run
Where once a child played in the sun
To claim, at last, his father's gun.
We march toward the last great war
It's pounding on your bedroom door
And death my win... forevermore.
The death who claims us from inside
From where there is no place to hide
Too late... discovering they lied.
They lied to us when there was hope
When we still had the time to cope
They lied... from President to Pope.
The lied with Bible under hand
They lied upon the witness stand
They lied there... in the shifting sand.
Now I'm not one who criticized
There're better men lobotomized
For saying what they realized.

See the rising of the sun
On judgement day is justice done
The last great war has just begun.
