June 2013

Dear VVAW Supporter,

You are receiving this email because you are a supporter of Vietnam Veterans Against the War (VVAW). Without you, we could not continue the important work that we began in 1967. Over the last forty-six years we have carried out the struggle for veterans, peace and justice. My name is Bill Branson and I am a National Coordinator of VVAW.

Over the last few years, many of you have asked us if we could offer paperless mailings and we listened. So here is our first online appeal — we hope you enjoy it!

The Veteran: Over 40 Years of Giving Veterans a Voice

You can now check out the latest issue of VVAW's free semi-annual newspaper, The Veteran, on our website here. The Spring 2013 issue features articles on the 40th anniversary of the Christmas Bombing, commentary on veterans' perspectives of gun violence, and much more.

After you check out the latest issue of The Veteran, you can take a look at over 80 issues of our paper. VVAW has been working to put up archives of all 115 issues of The Veteran and this archiving project should be completed by the end of the year. You can view both scanned versions of the newspaper to see it in its original format as well as searchable web pages. The Veteran was the first voice of Vietnam veterans in America, and has consistently addressed issues of peace and justice. It has featured original articles on Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Agent Orange since its first year of publication in 1971.

New York/New Jersey Chapter Hosts Conference on the Veterans Peace Movement

On May 18, 2013 — Armed Forces Day — the New York/New Jersey chapter of VVAW, as part of the Veterans Peace Council, helped organize a Conference on the Veterans Peace Movement. The Veterans Peace Council was started by the late Dave Cline to help coordinate anti-war activities by local veterans groups, and is now being revived by New York/New Jersey area chapters of Vietnam Veterans Against the War and Veterans for Peace.

This discussion about the peace movement was renewed on February 16, 2013, when the New York/New Jersey chapter of VVAW gathered to commemorate the life and legacy of the late Dave Cline, a longtime member and National Coordinator of Vietnam Veterans Against the War.

Both the February 16 and May 18 events were a great success! The conference featured such topics as: veterans witness to war, patriotic myths and rewriting history, and veterans and the politics of peace, what veterans bring to the movement for peace and social justice, what the movement can do for veterans, and how to organize veterans as veterans in the movement. Stay tuned for more updates from the New York Chapter.

Chicago Homeless Vets Standdown: June 21-22, 2013

The next Chicago Homeless Vets Standdown is coming up shortly on June 21-22 at the Armory (5200 S. Cottage Grove Ave., Chicago IL). Every year, VVAW is honored to provide volunteers to help with cleanup the day before and then to help staff the kitchen during the Standdown. Over 700 guests and 250 volunteers are fed over two days! VVAW also provides cleaning supplies and utensils for the Standdown.

In addition to free meals, homeless veterans are able to: receive medical triage, meet with various social service agencies, and get free haircuts and supplies. The Chicago Homeless Vets Standdown is sponsored by VVAW, the VA, VFW, VietNow, and Iraq Veterans Against the War (IVAW).

Support VVAW

We hope you can make a TAX-DEDUCTIBLE contribution to support VVAW's work, at whatever level. Every donation, no matter the size, enables us to carry on the struggle for veterans rights by issuing our free semi-annual newspaper, fighting for justice for victims of Agent Orange exposure, sustaining our continued efforts to achieve decent benefits for all veterans, and opposing unnecessary and illegal wars waged by our country. Take this opportunity to make a tax-deductible donation to support VVAW's work. We thank all of you for your continued support.

If you would like to send VVAW a check or money order, please make it out to "VVAW" and send it to:

If you would like to receive these paperless mailings instead of receiving them in the mail, please follow this link to let us know. This will keep you from receiving paper mailings and help cut costs for VVAW. If you receive The Veteran in the mail, this will not be affected.

Again, thank you for your continued support to further VVAW's mission of peace, justice, and the rights of all veterans.

Sincerely,

Bill Branson
