VA Policy Revoked

By VVAW

[Printer-Friendly Version]

Sometimes, the Veterans Administration bureaucrats just don't know when they're well off. A V.A. supervisor decided to harass a VVAW member, a member of the Bay Area VVAW chapter and a veteran of the WACs. She had been a member of a VVAW delegation of 10 vets who conferred with the VA Director around benefits for another veteran, and when she went to her work-study job the next day, the harassment began.

VVAW saw this as a direct attack--retaliation for jamming the VA the day before--and went to the Veterans Affairs Office to straighten her supervisor out.

By "personal policy," the supervisor held work-study paychecks for 100 hours even though the contracts stated that vets should be paid after 50 hours. When VVAW jammed the supervisor, he retailiated by firing the ex-WAC.

VVAW made it clear that the chapter was not going to sit by--that VVAW would take him on both around harassment and the firing. And the next day, the supervisor backed down. The VVAW member was re-hired and will be paid after 50 hours. And so will the other vets who work in his department. One more "personal" policy is revoked!
