New York VVAW: Cambodia, Vietnam Friendship Rallies

By VVAW

[Printer-Friendly Version]

Three years ago, in April of 1975, the Vietnamese and Cambodians won their independence and freedom after years of fighting for it. People around the world celebrated these events culminating years of international solidarity and the massive anti-war movement that aided the Indochinese people. It was a sad month for the U.S. ruling class, and a great one for the people of the world.

In April 1978, two celebrations were held in New York City, marking the third anniversary of these victories. On April 14th, the Group of Kampuchean Residents in America held a rally attended by several hundred people. On April 28th, the Association of Vietnamese Patriots in the U.S. held a celebration that also drew several hundred. The two events were co-sponsored by a large number of American and international organizations, including VVAW.

Both rallies were spirited and it was clear that the ties of friendship between the Indochinese and American people continues to exist.

Even while the Vietnamese and Cambodian armies are involved right now in a border conflict, the fact remains that through the years the common goal of the Indochinese and American people remains the same. During the long war, we were committed to an end of U.S. intervention in the liberation wars of the Vietnamese and Cambodians. Now, on the third anniversary of their triumph, we still stand with their struggle and support their redevelopment and right to self-determination.

For VVAW, and for many veterans, the victories of the Indochinese were a mighty inspiration. VVAW was founded at the height of the fighting, and spent many years demonstrating and building support for them. We are proud of the role we played and we are proud to count the people of Indochina as our friends and allies.

FIGHT THE RICH - NOT THEIR WARS
